Dr. Vishwanie Maharaj is an environmental economist with over 25 years of experience working on fisheries and environmental issues through research, engagement of industry, regional management bodies and non-governmental organizations. Both past and present work center on the use economic incentives to improve the ecological and socioeconomic performance of fisheries. Vishwanie is currently the Director of Tunas and International Fisheries at the World Wildlife Fund-Inc. (WWF-US). Current workstreams include ways to scale innovations in multilateral fisheries by addressing technical and economic barriers to wide scale uptake supported under the FAO Common Oceans Project through web based capacity building tools and business cases that address both economic and ecological improvements. Other related work include the use of trade policies of major market states’ to address illegal fishing and forced labor. Prior to WWF, Vishwanie held senior positions at Environmental Defense Fund, South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council and the American Sportfishing Association. She holds a doctoral degree in marine resource economics from the University of Rhode Island.
