Gjermund Birkeland is a marine biologist who has worked with the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries since 2010. He began his career as a fisheries inspector, carrying out operational fisheries control activities, and since 2016 has been involved in the development of digital tools to support fisheries monitoring, control, and surveillance. He currently serves as Programme Manager for the Future Fisheries Control Programme, a strategic initiative launched in 2025 to develop innovative solutions that strengthen documentation, traceability, and compliance in the fisheries sector. At SAFET, he will present the Directorate's work on CatchID and how catch identification technologies can contribute to greater transparency and trust throughout the seafood value chain.
